Free use up to 49 thinclients

Our company currently uses openthinclient and has 49 or fewer thinclients in use. Can we use the installation in business-case?

Yes. You can continue to use the openthinclient installation as a free community version for private use, business, education etc. 
However, you should note that openthinclient will offer no support via email, ticket system or phone.

I use the free version with less than 50 thinclients. Will I get support if a problem occurs during my installation?

No. You can search for your problem via openthinclient.org in our forum and wiki or ask a question there, but without guarantee of a helpful answer.
If you would like to receive support from openthinclient directly, you to order a minimum size of 50 licenses in our webshop.

License

How much is the usage license? Is there a price list?

The price is calculated per ThinClient per month. A price overview can be found here.
Please note: for large installations there is a volumne discount possible.

Our installation exceeds 50 clients and we need a license. Where can I get these?

After the update to 2019.1, you will find the corresponding notes on the dashboard of the openthinclient manager.
Specifically, you must order the appropriate number of licenses (at least 50) in the webshop, enter the delivery address and your server-ID. After the invoice has been created, the server automatically picks up the license.

Our company currently uses openthinclient in older version and has 50 or more thinclients in use. What will change for us?

If you use 50 or more thinclients a paid license is required from version 2019.1 on. openthinclient will then give you support in case of a problem or malfunctions with guaranteed reaction times. You can find a price overview here.
Alternatively, you can reduce the installation to 49 or less to use the software in the free community version.

I would like to use my installation with license and professional support by openthinclient.
If I have created more than 49 ThinClients, how many licenses do I have to buy if I reach e.g. 50?

You then have to purchase 50x the usage license.
(That it is not that in the above example the 49 are free and the 1 license has to be purchased.)
But as soon as the 50th limit is reached or exceeded, a license must be obtained for all thinclients.

What happens if I create more thinclients than the usage license allows me to do?

If you exceed the license number, a warning will appear within the openthinclient-manager asking you to order the corresponding license.
However, further work is temporarily still possible.

Billing

I need more licenses at short notice. What do I have to do? How does billing work?

You order in our webshop the appropriate number of licenses that you need more; please enter your server-ID when ordering.
You will receive an order confirmation and your server will automatically pick up the updated license.

If you have exceeded the license number, a warning message will appear – but it is still possible to continue working.

Billing always takes place the next month with the currently stored totaled number of licenses. The licenses that you add between two billing dates will be taken into account from the following billing onwards.

I need fewer licenses. What do I have to do? How does billing work?

You can reduce the number of licenses within the registration ticket at any time. However, 50 is the minimum amount. Billing always takes place on the next due date with the currently stored number of licenses. The licenses that you reduce between two billing dates will be taken into account from the following billing onwards.
Please inform us about the desired reduction by means of a support ticket.

When and how do you pay?

You will receive a monthly invoice with the currently valid license number.
After the invoice has been created, the server automatically retrieves the updated license.

If you have exceeded the payment by 1 month since the last billing deadline, a warning message appears – it is still possible to continue working.
If you have exceeded the payment by 2 months, a warning will appear on all ThinClient workstations – further work is then only possible to a limited extent.

Our company has several locations and several openthinclient installations. Can I transfer usage licenses from one location to another?

Yes. Please create a ticket for this under support.openthinclient.com and we will carry out the license transfer for you.

Our company has several locations and several openthinclient installations. Do I get an invoice per month per location, or an invoice for all locations together?

Both is possible. Please talk to us.

openthinclient-hardware / use of own hardware

I want to use old PCs or existing thinclients with openthinclient. Is that possible?

Yes. The only requirement is that the devices are x86-compatible (i.e., Apple, Raspberry, or Android devices do not work), have at least 1GB of memory and support PXE boot.
Currently we do not support UEFI bios. But this will be added in one of the next releases in 2020.

Our company wants to use openthinclient with older, existing PCs or thinclients initially and eventually replace it with new ThinClient models from openthinclient. Is that possible?

Yes. For every ThinClient device of openthinclient the “Business” license is included for 24 months. When an old client is replaced by a new device from openthinclient, the “paid” license will be replaced by an “inclusive” license.

Update from older versions

Can I continue to use my old installation?

Installations of the 2018.x versions will still be supported till the end of the year 2019. New support requests require upgrading to 2019.x or 2020.x

I still have an old installation with version 2.x or 2018.x, what can I do?

To update an older version to the current version, please follow the instructions in our wiki.
