Free use

Yes. You can use the openthinclient installation as a free community version privately, for business, in test environments, for educational institutions,
associations etc. free of charge.
However, you should note that openthinclient does not give you any support via email, ticket system or phone.
If you have any problems, please use the question portal at wiki.openthinclient.org.

No. You can search for your problem in our wiki wiki.openthinclient.org or ask a question there, but without any guarantee of a helpful answer. If you want support from openthinclient directly, you have to purchase at least the Business 50 or a service package from us in the Webshop.

Usage authorization

The price is calculated per ThinClient and month. You can find a price overview hier.
Please note that a quantity discount will also apply for larger installation.

You can see the number of used clients on the dashboard within the openthinclient manager.
If you want to create more than 24 ThinClients, please order the corresponding number of usage entitlements in the webshop and provide delivery address and your server ID.
After the invoice is created, the server will automatically pick up the usage entitlement.

If you use 25 or more ThinClients, a paid license is required starting with version 2022.1. openthinclient then gives you support in case of a problem or malfunction with guaranteed response times.

If you want to create 55x ThinClients – as in the example – you have to purchase at least 1x the Business 50 package
and additionally 5x single Thin Client usage rights.

If you exceed the usage authorization, a warning appears within the openthinclient manager and on the ThinClients
with the hint that you have to reorder the corresponding usage rights.
However, it is still possible to continue working temporarily.

Billing

You order the corresponding number of usage rights you need more in our webshop;
enter your server ID when you place the order.
You will receive an order confirmation and your server will automatically pick up the updated usage rights.

If you have exceeded the number of usage rights, a warning message will appear – but it is still possible to continue working temporarily.

Billing always takes place for the next month with the currently stored total number of usage authorizations.
This means that usage authorizations that you add between two billing dates will only be taken into account from the following billing date.

If you want to have an annual accounting, the calculation will be done on a pro rata basis of the months.

Use of own hardware

Yes. The only requirement is that the devices have x86-compatible 64-bit CPUs
(i.e. devices from Apple, Raspberry or Android do not work) have at least 2GB of main memory and support PXE boot.

Update older versions

Support for 2018.x versions ended in December 2019.
Support requests require a switch to the latest version.

To update an older version to the current version, please follow the instructions in our Wiki.
There you will also find hints for updates from the respective older versions in the menu.

OS-on-a-Stick

The development of OS-on-a-Stick is currently stopped. The openthinclient development team is currently concentrating on the
on the management server due to the high demand.
The OS-on-a-Stick application will be integrated as a localboot application at a later date.
