From the administrative workstation to the injection molding machine – From “legacy equipment” to a modern thin client solution

🚧 Initial situation and challenges

The first contact between openthinclient and Mr. Fischer, the IT manager at OMEGA TECHNOLOGY GmbH & CO. KG, was established via LinkedIn. It quickly became clear that there were two areas in IT where urgent changes were required:

  • The existing Igel UD2 devices in administration caused increasing frustration. Software maintenance became more and more expensive, and the rigid licensing policy was no longer worthwhile.
  • For the production lines, especially at the injection molding machines, robust touch devices were required. Requirements included, among others:
    • 10 to 15 inch screen size, at least 1024×768 resolution
    • Capacitive touch display, usable even with gloves

⚙ ️ Implementation with openthinclient

After a short period of time, old, decommissioned computers were successfully put back into operation — devices that were originally intended for disposal. The entry into the production environment was also successful:

• The PANEL.MINI.12 was installed as a test device.
• It impressed with easy integration, an autologin function,
as well as the ability to run browser applications in kiosk mode.
• In January, a pilot project was launched together with the company ENGEL AUSTRIA GmbH,
in which the MINI.12 devices were tested in a productive environment.

💡 Technical Requirements

Administration: Continued operation of the Igel UD2 clients using openthinclient instead of the cost-intensive Igel software.
Production: Touch panels on machines that only display a web application in full-screen mode.

Particularly valuable in this context were:

• USB redirection
• Auto-login function
• Flexible scalability from a test device up to the planned rollout of more than 60 devices across multiple halls.

 

🎯 Conclusion and Feedback

With openthinclient, OMEGA TECHNOLOGY was able to successfully address two key IT challenges at the same time:

• Cost reduction in administration through the continued use of existing
UD2 clients without expensive licenses.
• Future-ready production with robust touch panels that are easy to manage
and precisely tailored to the requirements.

Mr. Fischer draws a clear conclusion:

“We have revived old computers while at the same time creating a stable foundation for production. The flexibility of openthinclient in particular gives us planning security for the coming years.”

The rollout has already been completed. The next step planned is expansion into additional production areas in order to consolidate administration and manufacturing in the long term into a unified, cost-efficient solution.
