🚧 Initial Situation and Challenges
At Klinikum Fichtelgebirge, recurring problems occurred when using Philips dictation devices in conjunction with the operating system Igel OS12 and Remote Desktop connections (RDP). These limitations impaired smooth workflows, particularly in everyday medical practice, and led the IT department to look for alternatives..
Challenges at a glance:
• Compatibility issues with peripherals (digital dictation devices).
• Limited flexibility
️ Implementation with openthinclient
The clinic discovered openthinclient through a Google search. Registration, download, and initial tests went smoothly. System administrator Lukas Peuckert praised the good documentation and was able to set up the solution largely independently. After positive feedback from the test phase, the rollout was planned.
One difference compared to the previous solution was the boot behavior:
openthinclient uses PXE, whereas Igel relies on local boot media. For workstations requiring autonomous booting, the “Localboot” app was set up together with support.
Implementation steps:
• Test phase with direct positive user experience
• Fast, independent commissioning
• Technical adjustment of boot behavior using “Localboot”
• Rollout support provided by openthinclient support
Technical Requirements
The openthinclient solution was successfully integrated into the existing infrastructure based on Windows RDS. It is now used both at the main clinic and in two medical care centers (MVZs).
The thin clients are in productive use across various departments and are being continuously expanded.
Current areas of use:
• Patient admission
• Emergency department
• Doctors’ offices
• Reception and gate/entrance areas
Future expansions:
• Introduction of QR code barcode scanners
• Use of thin clients in operating room areas
Conclusion and Feedback
The switch to openthinclient brings numerous advantages to Klinikum Fichtelgebirge in day-to-day IT administration. Centralized management of the clients as well as the quick setup of new devices simplify operations and save valuable time in daily IT work. Updates are rolled out centrally and are immediately available on all devices after a reboot. Even in the event of failures, the replacement process is greatly simplified.
Advantages at a glance:
• Support for Philips digital dictation devices
• Easy management via a graphical user interface
• Fast setup and configuration of new clients
• Time savings for updates and maintenance
• Stable operation in medically sensitive environments
“It’s all centrally managed, super simple. I do an update once and by the next morning at the latest it’s distributed to all clients. Even when a client fails, the effort is minimal:
unplug the defective client, plug in a new one, 2 clicks in the openthinclient manager, save, done – switch on the new client and that’s it.”
