From the administrative workstation to the injection molding machine -
From „old device“ to modern ThinClient solution

🚧 Initial situation and challenges

The first contact between openthinclient and Mr. Fischer, the IT manager at OMEGA TECHNOLOGY GmbH & CO. KG, came about. It quickly became clear that there were two areas in IT where changes were urgently needed:

  • The existing Igel UD2 devices in the administration were causing increasing frustration. Software maintenance was becoming more and more expensive, and the rigid license policy was no longer worthwhile.
  • For the production lines, especially on the injection molding machines, robust touch devices were sought. The requirements were among others:
    • 10 to 15 inch screen size, at least 1024×768 resolution
    • Capacitive touch display, can also be used with gloves

⚙ ️ Implementation with openthinclient

After just a short time, old, decommissioned computers were successfully put back into operation - devices that were originally due to be disposed of. It was also possible to enter the production environment:

- The PANEL.MINI.12 was installed as a test device.
- It impressed with its simple integration and autologin function,
and the option to run browser applications in kiosk mode.
- In January, together with the company ENGEL AUSTRIA GmbH
a pilot project in which the MINI.12 devices are used in a productive environment.
were tested.

💡 Technical requirements

Administration: Continued operation of the Igel UD2 clients with openthinclient instead of the cost-intensive Igel software. Production: Touch panels on machines that only display a web application in full screen.
Particularly valuable were:

- USB redirection
- Autologin function
- Flexible scaling from the test device to the planned introduction of over 60 devices in several halls.

🎯 Conclusion and feedback

With openthinclient, OMEGA TECHNOLOGY has successfully mastered two central IT challenges:

- Cost reduction in administration through the continued use of existing
UD2 clients without expensive licenses.
- Future-proof production with robust touch panels that are easy to manage
and are precisely tailored to the requirements.

Mr. Fischer draws a clear conclusion:

„We have revived old computers and at the same time created a stable basis for production. The flexibility of openthinclient in particular gives us planning security for the coming years.“
The rollout has already been completed. The next step is to expand to additional production areas in order to fully consolidate administration and production onto a standardized, cost-efficient solution in the long term.
