Initial situation and challenges
The RONAL GROUP's production facilities were running numerous industrial-grade terminals that primarily required a single application: IBM i emulation or an internal web application.
Despite the limited range of functions, a fully-fledged Windows operating system was installed on each terminal (XP to 10). This brought:
️ Implementation with openthinclient
The first step was to examine various thin client concepts and providers. The choice fell on openthinclient, as this solution fulfilled several key requirements:
- PXE boot, automatic app launches, quick swap (< 5 min.)
- Central control in kiosk mode
- Continued use of robust Hematec terminals (-20 °C to +60 °C)
Technical requirements
All technical requirements placed on an industrial IT system could be implemented.
- Fast deployment: network boot via PXE, central config management
- High security: locked USB interfaces, read-only OS
- Minimal maintenance: no local updates necessary, replacement within minutes.
- Scalability: DE, MX, CZ, PL, other plants possible
Conclusion and feedback
Its use is so convincing that openthinclient has now been defined as the company-wide standard for production environments.
- Production availability increases significantly; failure and downtime costs are reduced.
- Administration effort reduced to a minimum: central console instead of manual client maintenance
- Improved IT security: no superfluous programs, no data extractions via USB.
- Employee focus on core activities - no more „passing the time“ at the terminal.
- solution has proven its worth and has been established as the Group-wide standard.
„Suppose a terminal breaks down in production today. Then I go to the warehouse, get a new one... make an IP reservation on the DHCP and create it in the openthinclient manager. All this takes about 5 minutes with booting and walking, then the colleague can continue his work. With our previous Windows solution, installing the image alone took around four hours.“
