OS-on-a-stick - basic principle

Basic principle
The openthinclient-solution is for use with Citrix Workspace, Windows TerminalServer, VMware Horizon or with Browser and cloud applications.

The OS-on-a-stick is a self-contained image that can be installed on an USB stick or a flash card.
All settings are saved on the USB stick. No central management is necessary.

openthinclient is quick and easy to install and configure.
The operation of the solution is stable and inexpensive.

Software content

When you download the OS-on-a-stick software, you'll receive the following components:

  • image for installation on an USB stick or on a flash storage
  • openthinclient-OS: operating system based on Debian-Linux, contains application for server based computing
  • local openthinclient-manager

Requirements of the image

To test and use the OS-on-a-stick image there are two opportunities:

1) installation on an USB stick

  • at least 4 GB
  • all settings and configurations are saved on the USB stick
  • the hard disk of the PC is not used, no software is installed
  • USB stick can be used for testing purposes on various hardware

2) installation on a local flash memory or harddisk

  • at least 4 GB
  • harddisk will be repartitioned, als exisiting data will be erased
  • all settings and configurations are saved on the medium
  • boot-up generally faster than from a USB stick
  • is bound to the hardware by the local installation

Requirements thinclients

In principle, any PC or ThinClient can be used if it fulfills these requirements:

  • Intel compatible x86 CPU
  • 32 or 64 bit hardware (recommended: 64 bit)

What we don't currently support:

  • WLAN / WiFi

You can find more information here in our documentation.

Download the image an boot from stick

After downloading the image, it must be copied to a stick. This can be done with a Windows or Linux computer. There are easy-to-use tools for this, or you can use the block copy commands on the operating system side.

Then insert the USB stick into an existing PC, thin client or laptop. If necessary, change the boot order in the BIOS so that the computer boots first from USB. After startup, you will find an icon for the openthinclient manager on the desktop. There you can now make the settings for network, screen resolution and create applications for this client in a self-explanatory interface.

In the example shown here, the thin client receives its IP address via DHCP from the Fritz-Box in the home office.
After that, a VPN connection can then be started.

Working with SBC applications

In order to access the company headquarters from the home office, a secure connection via OpenVPN is created and the tunnel started. The basic settings of the OpenVPN application can be made via the manager.

The applications created in the manager (e.g. RDP client, Citrix Receiver) are immediately active after saving and assigned to your thin client. You will find the respective icon on the desktop or in the start bar.
The connection to the terminal server or virtual desktop can now be established by double-clicking and after the login process with user and password, the user can start working.
